Bone Grafting Santa Rosa CA

Fountaingrove Oral Surgery

Grafted Bone is completely replaced by regeneration of your own bone in 4-6 months. The grafted bone goes through several stages of healing. For the first 4-6 weeks the grafted bone is soft, malleable and may be displaced.

The Day of your Surgery please follw these instructions to control minor bleeding. Keep a gauze pack directly on the surgical site and apply gentle pressure. Change the gauze pack every 20-30 minutes until the minor bleeding is controlled. It is common to have slight bleeding for a few hours after bone grafting surgery. DO NOT rinse or clean the teeth next to the surgical site for at least 24 hours following your surgery . This can wash away the newly formed blood clot, causing bleeding. If bleeding persists, apply a moist BLACK tea bag to the surgical site with gentle pressure for 20-30 minutes. Repeat the application of the tea bag for a second time if you still have slight bleeding.

To control minor swelling apply an ice pack to the outer cheek near your surgical site. Keep your head elevated above chest level. Apply ice for 20 minutes, and remove the ice for 20 minutes, alternating continuously, as much as possible for the first 24 hours.

Continue taking pain medications as directed, and as needed.

AVOID SMOKING FOR THE FIRST 72 HOURS AFTER YOUR SURGERY, as this can potentially disrupt the newly formed blood clot, and hinder your healing.

Soft nutritious foods are recommended for the first week after your surgical procedure. Please chew on the opposite side of your mouth during the first week of healing. The day of your surgery please avoid eating and drinking HOT foods, which may cause bleeding. Avoid drinking with straws for the first 72 hours, as this could disrupt your newly formed blood clot.

Gentle, warm salt water rinses are recommended begining 24 hours after your surgery. Rinse gently after each meal (at least 3 times daily) to keep the surgical area clean. Gently swish with a mixture of one half teaspoon of salt to a cup of warm water for 30 seconds.

Oral Hygiene instructions are as follows, begin brushing and flossing all other teeth 24 hours after your  procedure, avoiding the surgical site. The tongue should also be brushed.

Excercise is recommended to be limited for the first 3-4 days following your procedure. You may not drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours after IV sedation, or while taking narcotic pain medications such as Norco or Percocet.
